Fire Department

Insights From The Fire Department!

As November begins, many people are turning on heaters that haven’t been used in months. Before doing so, check for dust, debris, or damage that could cause them to smoke or even catch fire. Clean the heater, inspect vents for blockages, and ensure it’s working properly. Always keep flammable items at least three feet away to prevent fire risks. With Daylight Saving Time ending, it’s also the perfect reminder to check your smoke detector batteries. A simple test and battery replacement can be lifesaving, ensuring your alarms are fully functional as you begin using heaters and ovens more frequently. Finally, Thanksgiving is one of the busiest days for cooking-related fires. When preparing meals, especially large ones, always stay in the kitchen when frying, grilling, or boiling. If you’re using multiple burners or the oven, keep an eye on timers and avoid distractions. Consider having a fire extinguisher nearby just in case, and ensure that kids and pets stay clear of the cooking area to prevent accidents.
